This carved wooden mask is attributed to the Metoko (also known as Mituku) people of the Lualaba region in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its restrained yet powerful design is characteristic of this artistic tradition, where expressive strength arises from balanced proportions and refined simplicity.

The elongated oval face is entirely covered with deep vertical grooves that animate the surface of the mask. Narrow almond-shaped eyes framed by prominent eyelids, a subtle nose ridge and a discreet mouth create a calm, introspective expression.

Two small upright ears project from the upper part of the face, adding a distinctive sculptural element frequently encountered on masks attributed to the Metoko. The combination of these features gives the piece a striking visual presence while remaining remarkably understated.

Masks from this region were used during community ceremonies, initiation rites and other important social events. Beyond their ceremonial role, they embodied spiritual forces and conveyed cultural values within the community.
