This finely cast bronze sculpture depicts a mounted horseman in the distinctive style of the ancient Sao civilization, which flourished around the Lake Chad Basin from the first millennium BC until the sixteenth century.

Created using the lost-wax casting technique, the figure illustrates the remarkable metalworking tradition developed by Sao craftsmen. Although modest in size, the composition is highly expressive.
