Seli Ripolin masks in African art

These colorful masks, also known as "Ripolin masks" (they appeared with the arrival of the first paintings brought back by the colonists) are used for many celebrations and are secular masks, that everyone can see. They consist of a female face, surmounted by an infinite variety of scenes, animal or not. Although symbolizing a female face, they are only danced by men. This traditional mask is covered with a thick bright red patina that contrasts with the masks encountered most often.
