Kpwan Ple mask - Baule - Ivory Coast

The mask Kpwan (Kpan) Ple in the traditional African art of Ivory Coast

The african Baule masks of Kpwan tyope are feminine. The model varies according to the regions, the forehead and the temples are punctuated by scarifications. The hairstyle comes in a powerful volume surmounted by a small classic outgrowth. These traditional masks appear as part of the cult of Goli in which several pairs of masks take turns. The Kpwan are the last ones to show up at nightfall. Beautiful detail work on the headdress and interesting clear patina.
