This small anthropomorphic figure is conceived in a compact, hieratic manner, with the arms raised alongside the face and the body reduced to strongly simplified volumes. The oversized head concentrates much of the sculpture’s expressive force, reflecting a broader tendency within Kongo visual culture to emphasize the human figure as a vehicle for ideas of status, protection and spiritual agency.

Metalworking has a long history within Kongo artistic traditions. Copper, brass and related alloys were employed for prestige objects, devotional works and small-scale sculpture. Here, the richly oxidized surface, combining deep brown tones with extensive green accretions, gives the figure a particularly archaeological and sculptural presence.
