Substantial Zande anthropomorphic figure carved from wood and enriched with organic and applied materials. The broad face is animated by light-coloured inlays around the eyes and mouth, while the body retains remnants of animal hide or membrane, fibre bindings and a heavily worked surface indicative of prolonged ritual use.

Among the Zande, certain anthropomorphic sculptures were connected with protective and ritual practices, notably within the Mani cult. Figures known as Yanda could be ritually empowered with substances and used to promote protection, health and success. The Metropolitan Museum, for example, preserves Zande figures made of wood and “sacrificial materials” associated with this cultic context.

This example differs from the more compact and highly abstract Yanda figures through its larger proportions and extensive use of added materials. It is therefore safer to describe it more broadly as a Zande ritual figure, rather than assigning a precise function. Its dense surface, organic attachments and extensive signs of handling give the piece a particularly strong ritual presence.
