Fine female Mbala figure carved in wood, distinguished by its powerful silhouette, prominent abdomen and contemplative posture.
The figure stands with slightly bent legs firmly planted on the ground. The arms rise toward the upper body, with the hands meeting beneath the chin in a gesture that gives the sculpture a calm and introspective presence. The strongly emphasized abdomen may allude to fertility, motherhood or, more broadly, ideals of femininity.
The face is highly stylized, with elongated almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose and a discreet mouth. Small scarification marks are visible on the cheeks. The hairstyle is particularly striking, forming a strongly architectural horizontal structure above the head.
The wood displays a deep reddish-brown polished patina, with areas of wear and handling that enhance the sculptural volumes. The deliberately emphasized treatment of the abdomen, legs and facial features gives the piece a strong visual presence.
