Koro Gbene cup figure
In African art, the traditional Koro corpus is best known for its trunk statues embellished with an extruded ventral cavity, as seen in the piece presented here.
This Koro statue bears the ethnic name of Gbene. It was used by the Koro (northern Nigeria) by the Jaba community as part of ceremonial sacrifices. Palm wine and beer were poured into it.
The treatment of the body is reminiscent of Mumuye art and related ethnic groups.
Here, the figure is also endowed with a patina based on red pigment which and the statue in highlight.
