Punu figure

Punu traditional art

African ethnicity Punu statue. This African figure was used for ancestor worship. This piece is encrusted with thick white pigment as are very often the famous masks of the Mukiyu or Okuyi of the Punu and subgroups. We find on the forehead the famous diamond scarification present on the masks as well.
The cavity in the torso was probably used to insert the bones of the deceased in the manner of the Kota and Mbete who made their statues into reliquaries.
