Lega Iginga figure

The initiatory statuary of Bwami

Belgian Tribal Art Collector

The Lega, formerly called Warega or Rega, form an ethnic group with a dispersed habitat in the forests of eastern Congo and whose only socio-political structure was originally the secret society Bwami creating the bond of unity . The members of this association are called bami. To pass the initiatory degrees, it is necessary to be circumcised beforehand and to pass the imposed tests.

The statuette that I am offering you here is a symbol and badge of a Bwami company officer. She has no arms and her body is covered with punctures. Each Lega statuette, whatever its shape, carries a message, an aphorism, intended to instill in the pretender the Lega moral values.

In the attached photo, senior Bwami initiates wearing their insignia.
