Lega Iginga figure
Bwami: art and initiation
Anthropomorphic statue sculpted by artist Lega in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The iginga statues in feet, heads and zoomorphic representations are many and varied in African Lega art. These objects, as well as the small masks of the lukwakongo or lukungu type were part of the bwami, during initiation sessions led by officers, men or women.
Each object carried a particular meaning and it is rare to know this precisely since it was in fact intimately linked to the ritual context in which the piece was used.
