Bambara female figure
This Jonyeleniw Bambara statue is linked to a Bamana initiatory society. It is through the sculptures that the existence of the Jo society was revealed at the end of the 1950s. Previously, ethnography made only rare allusions to it. Prior to field research, Jo figures were given more or less fanciful meanings by referring to a cosmogonic myth or by describing them as queens. These statues refer neither to persons nor to personalised symbolic figures, but rather to ideals or values.
