Lega Kalimbangoma Figurine
Rare and old Lega bone figurine. The Lega classify sculptures into several categories that may include other forms of art. Some of these anthropomorphic figurines are kalimbangoma. This category contains zoomorphic figurines, miniature sculptures, and assemblages of other objects. The majority of anthropomorphic pieces in this category are generally owned by members of high rank. Members of the Musagi wa Kindi, the lowest rung of the highest rank, own an anthropomorphic statuette like this, made of bone or ivory called a kalimbangoma as a sign of their status.
Very pretty finely carved bone figurine. The expressive face is hallmarked. The very smooth brownish patina was obtained by the application of numerous libations of palm oil during the rituals of Bwami.
One leg has been restored.
