Figure Mbole

Ritual and initiation of the Lilwa among the Mbole

This Mbole statue represents a character hanged by the Lilwa for causing trouble and breaking certain rules of society. This scene was shown as an example to teach future initiates the importance of the rules in the village and to discourage future initiates from violating the law and the morals of the Lilwa. During the initiation rites, the young boys had to approach and touch the body of the statues to reinforce their fear and their fear of reprisals, throughout their lives and at each incursion or inappropriate behaviour, the initiates had to swear at this scene and replay this terrible image.
