Lega Sakimatwematwe figure - SOLD OUT
Lega art and beauty in the heart of Africa
This four-faced figure represents Sakimatwematwe, Lord of many heads. The multi-headed, multi-fronted figure is often used in Lega art. It is not related to the representations of Janus in ancient Rome or to the concepts of ambiguity and hypocrisy. Sir many-heads saw an elephant on the opposite bank of the great river Lwalaba. The text conveys the superior knowledge and insight of the high ranking initiate. He sees and knows things unseen and unknown to others. He applies his sense of justice as an arbiter between young and old, male and female, initiated and uninitiated, good and evil.
