Mambila Tadep figure
African statuary from northern Cameroon
African Mambila statue in monoxyl wood of an asexual character. The territories in the north of Cameroon are very large and are home to the Mambila people. The twenty-five thousand Mambila have created a large number of masks and statues recognisable by their heart-shaped faces and applications of red and white pigments.
The Mambila statues are believed to personify the ancestors who, according to Mambila beliefs, are responsible for the prosperity of the tribe.
Provenance:
A large part of the objects in this collection were donated to the Musée d'ethnographie de Genève in the 1980s. We will provide detailed information on request.
