Kiala Moko Ntadi figure

African funerary Ntadi Mintadi statues

This Kongo anthropomorphic statue is particularly rare, usually made of stone, Ntadi statues are usually placed on the graves of important people. The different poses of these figures express different emotions, so the gesture of the figures can mean both imploring and giving.

Some sources indicate that mintadi figures were also kept in the houses of chiefs and represented the ruler when he was absent or at war. Other sources indicate that mintadi figures are statues of ancestors, memorial figures placed on graves for surviving family members to consult in times of need. What is clear, however, is that the representations are reflections of how the client would like to be remembered after death.
