Mumuye Lagana ancestor figure
African statuary from Nigeria
The African Mumuye statues were only discovered in the early 1960s. The use of these lagana statues is not yet very clear and could in fact be multiple.
Various testimonies emanating from the field attribute to these remarkable form objects uses such as divination, healing and protection. The fact of owning this type of piece was in itself a symbol of prestige, especially when the statue came from a famous sculptor or was large in size like the copy I am offering you here.
It is also likely that, regardless of their active role, these statues were initially effigies of ancestors.
