Bakongo funerary cult
This African statue representing a drummer seated on his instrument is called bitumba and comes from the Kongo-Yombe. This is an unusual type of figure that was placed on funerary or ancestral altars in a specific sanctuary called nzo a bakulu located above the tomb of Chief Yombe (luumbu).
An example of this type of shrine built over a tomb is shown in the attached background photo. Under the roof, three Kongo statues stand in honor of the deceased chief.
