Zande Ngia figure

African art from Ubangi

I offer you here a quite exceptional piece: it is a statue of Zande origin but not just any statue. This one was carved in stone and not in wood. This rare type of statuette among the Zande bears the generic name of ngia and is linked to the Mani Yanda initiatory cult.

We find there the stylistic codes of the north of the R. D. Congo: massive and stylized body with small arms, powerful legs and earrings. The eyes here are encrusted with blue pearls.
