Nyamwezi figure
Surrealism in the traditional art of Tanzania
This African wooden statue adorned with pearl necklaces is a true masterpiece of African art: the sculptor brings together here, without doubt, a couple in a single character with two juxtaposed heads. Traditionally and in accordance with the artistic conceptions of the Nyamwezi, the body is thin and slender. Nyamwezi statues are often distinguished by their agility and finesse.
The ritual role played by this remarkable piece is not clear. Piece carved with the effigy of a couple of ancestors or anthropomorphic dowsing rod as the Nyamwezi dowsers used it? Taken out of its ethnic context, it is no longer possible to determine its meaning.
