Hemba Singiti ancestor figure
Ancestor effigy in African art
Imposing African statue of Hemba origin, an ethnic group close to the Luba kingdom whose artistic corpus was long believed to be an integral part. This singiti statue is an effigy of an ancestor. This type of statue in African Hemba art was always male. There is a naturalistic treatment and a great sculptural mastery in particular at the level of the detailed face.
Culturally close to the Luba, we find among the Hemba the headdress pulled back and a stylistic treatment close to traditional Luba art.
