Chokwe Kaponia figure
African art among the Chokwe of Angola
Rare Kaponya Nawazeia figure, Chokwe, Mahakolo north of Peso, Angola.
This statue comes from a Portuguese family and was collected around the middle of the 20th century.
A similar statue can be found in the inventory of the Brooklyn Museum, see link below.
This figure was used to represent the guardian spirit of an important Chokwe diviner. Over her left shoulder, the woman holds an antelope horn, usually a container for powerful substances. There is a metal piece on top of her head, this detail and many other reasons confirm a great ritual use, including this wonderful patina. The face is particularly well cared for, this statue must have represented an important person and the realization of this one was entrusted to a real confirmed Chokwe artist.
