Mangbetu ancestors figures

Artistic designs in the Mangbetu tradition

The Mangbetu are very well known in traditional African art for their architecture but especially for their artistic corpus mainly composed of statues of ancestors and everyday objects. Their headdresses and bodies are easily recognizable, indeed, the Mangbetu individuals practiced the body paintings found on the statues here and on the attached contextual photos, for aesthetic purposes.

The same goes for hairstyles affixed to artificially elongated skulls using cords wrapped around the head from an early age.
