Yoruba Ibeji Igbomina figures
Celebration of the Child in African Art
Pair of African statues originating from the Yoruba country, in Nigeria. These are famous sculptures depicting twins, called ibeji or ibedji. Stylistic treatment varies by region. If several centuries ago the birth of twins was considered, among the Yoruba, as a curse, this changed late and that is how we began to order sculptures like these to celebrate their birth. The mother then had to take care of both the ibeji and her real children.
Their particular style is Igbomina, Oro region.
