Yaka Nkoku Ngoombu slit drum
Slit drums are African art objects existing within several ethnic groups.
In the case of the Yaka, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, one addresses an ngoombu diviner when one is affected by illness or misfortune and seeks to determine the cause.
It is the responsibility of the ngoombu to determine the cause and prescribe recommendations.
This n'koku ngoombu (also called n-kookwa ngoombu) slit drum was used in divination rites.
During these rites, the diviner struck the instrument with a stick (connected here by a cord) in order to invoke the spiritual forces.
The sounds will also accompany the words of the diviner in order to translate the cause of the misfortune that has affected his client.
Musical instruments such as slit drums and other percussion are still used today during traditional dances and local festivities.
