Yaka whistle

In African art, figurative everyday objects, including musical instruments, are prominent. African whistles serve as carriers of messages or signals during hunting. Among the Yaka, the hunting chief employs a whistle called yimbila to alert other trackers or call his dog.

The sound could be modulated through the lateral extension of the whistle. The addition of faces or figurative elements, as seen on this object, bestows additional prestige upon its owner.
