Lega instrument

At the heart of the ritual traditions of the Mwenga region in Zaire, a rare treasure was revealed by the passionate explorer, Hugues Dupriez (1939-2020).

This musical instrument, meticulously collected in situ and accompanied by a small handwritten note by H. Dupriez himself, was created for the grandiose festivities organized by the Mwami, and it embodies a rarity and originality that captivate the imagination .

Exceptionally, we know, thanks to this note, the date of acquisition of the object, namely February 8, 1985.

Hugues Dupriez's collection of African art was built up over several decades during his travels in Africa, right down to the heart of the smallest villages.

In 2023, the majority of the objects he collected throughout his life were distributed at an auction and were the subject of an illustrated catalog paying tribute to him in particular for his sociological and ecological investment among small farmers.

You will find this catalog here: https://issuu.com/co.invest.be/docs/dupriez_catalogue_numerique

Hugues Dupriez was above all passionate about nature and people, which led him to work throughout his life in favor of the African rural world.

His motto “dust on the feet is better than dust on the behind” perfectly sums up the life he led.

Tireless, Hugues has invested body and soul in Africa for the development of agroecology and the autonomy of farmers.

His true wealth was that of the bond he had built with the women and men who crossed his path.

Passionate about arts and culture, throughout his life he brought back to Belgium, his native country, numerous heterogeneous objects from the most remote villages, testimonies of the affection shown to him.

Among this collection: beautiful masks, rare statues, surprising fetishes and magical charms, some accompanied by exceptional handwritten documents informing us about the ritual use of the object."
