Figurative jar Mangbetu
African Art Mangbetu: African Clay Jars and Pottery
In the first quarter of the 20th century, a few artists - in the village of Niangara and at the court of King Okondo - initiated the tradition of anthropomorphic ceramics, which has become one of the most sensitive expressions of Mangbetu art.
This one is one of the most remarkable examples.
Transcending the functionality of the object, the bust/receptacle blossoms in the roundness of the body, the movement of the neck giving the head its haughty bearing. To the perfection of the form is added the refinement of the signs of beauty, expressed in the features of the face or arranged by the man's hand.
This type of jar can be found at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, among other places.
