Mangbetu Sundu jar
€440.00
Anthropomorphic African jar of Mangbetu origin intended to collect palm wine. This traditional pottery topped with a head is called sundu. The elongated headdress is characteristic of the Mangbetu, a people from the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Similar pots were also used by the Mangbetu as part of the naando rite. Their custom was to fill them with palm wine mixed with a root decoction called naando. The beverage produced an exciting effect on the dancers and initiates and brought good fortune to the place where the dances were performed.
This old jar comes from the collection of the Soubry family built up over three generations to which we have dedicated a blog article.
