Salampasu ram mask
Salampasu african art
Rare african masks
The Salampasu (southern Democratic Republic of the Congo) are known in African art for their famous Mukinka masks generally covered with a metal plating, adorned with small wicker spheres and whose aggressiveness is extremely marked, in particular by the open mouth with sharp teeth. These masks are worn during ceremonies preparing men for war.
However, there is another type of mask that is much less common, representing a ram. There are only about ten copies of these masks with horns and simple features. There is no consensus on their use, but it could be a ceremonial mask for hunting preparation.
