Chokwe passeport mask
Scarifications and masks in African art
Small African mask intended to be carried by hand or attached to the arm. This is a mask of Chokwe origin easily recognizable as being a miniature variation (passport mask) of the famous masks representing a "beautiful young woman" mana pwo. There are many scarifications on the forehead, the cheeks but also the cheekbones where they represent tears. The mouth is ajar and reveals carved teeth. They are a fashion found not only among the Tschokwe but also among the Bakongo and other ethnic groups in Africa.
