Lwalwa mask

Lwalwa Style and Tradition in Black African Tribal Art

The Lwalwa stylistic corpus expresses the avant-garde research of geometric forms on certain objects of tribal art from Black Africa. The shapes of this mask are intersecting, a cubist aspect gives it a modern, contemporary and design air. It reminds us of the great European artists of the early 20th century who obviously drew their inspiration from this type of primitive art. The high domed forehead of this mask is divided into two parts by a straight and protruding nasal ridge. The concave face, eyes and mouth are still marked with kaolin. Pure and abstract, this African Lwalwa mask is a masterful artistic achievement.
