Kidumu Tsaye Teke Mask - Sold Out

Abstract and realistic African art among the Teke of the D. R. Congo D. Congo

Mask from the Kidumu society, Zanaga region, Tsaye of the Democratic Republic of Congo.  The Teke make moon-shaped dance masks, flat and decorated with symbols. This society is a political and religious institution created about 150 years ago when the Tsaye split from the mother ethnic group. Kidumu is the patron saint of major social events: circumcision, marriage or death of chiefs, alliances and judgements.

The Tsaye treat the human face in an abstract and symbolic way. Holes are made around the perimeter to attach a feather headdress and a beard of raffia.
