Mukishi Wa Cihongo mask
African Chokwe / Tshokwe art
This mask from a private Belgian collection is of rare quality and corresponds to the creative styles of the Chokwe artists of the early 20th century. The inner patina of the mask shows traces of use. The mask is sold on its customised base.
This hardwood mask was traditionally stained red with a heated paste of oil and red earth, and then finished by pyrography. Under the eyes and embedded in the concave face, we find the traditional tears called Masoji and on the forehead the tattoo TSHINGELYENGELYE. The lips uncover the spiked teeth according to the warrior tradition, it symbolises wealth and power.
The wearer of this mask is responsible for collecting the tribute given to the chief during a tour lasting two or three months and taking him from village to village. This mask also confers judicial power on its wearer.
