African masks of Greater Maniema
This ovoid African mask with a concave face bears a strong resemblance to the mask of Marc Leo Felix, published in Fred Jahn's book on the masks of the great Maniema, 1989:285,#73, see attached photos. With its primate instinct and naive features, this African mask with its heart-shaped face bears witness to the master sculptor's formidable skills.
The Nyanga are a small ethnic group living in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a forest region of Maniema. They have a social and cultural organisation close to that of the Kumu, hence the natural influence and resemblance on several points, as well as certain forest peoples. This mask was worn during initiations that could last several days.
