Ntomo Marka Mask

Modigliani is back

The Ntomo association is grouped by a hierarchy of five grades, the uncircumcised adolescents. In the Ntomo masks the number of horns symbolises the degree of knowledge. This object has four small sculpted gazelle horns on the forehead and two lateral copper alloy braids along the face. The art of the Marka is related to the Bambara group. The mask is covered with chiselled and hammered brass leaves, the oxidation is remarkable, which testifies to a proven and supposed age in the middle of the 20th century. This work is irresistibly reminiscent of the artist Modigliani.
