Yoruba Gélédé mask

Mask of the Gélédé society of the Yoruba

The origin of the Gélédé mask dates back to the end of the 18th century and comes from the area of the ancient kingdom of Ketu. The Gélédé society honours the spiritual powers of elderly women, affectionately referred to as "AWON IYA WA", (our mothers). These practices reflect the belief that the prosperity of a community is linked to its fertility.
