Songola mask
Art of Lega Africa
Songola masks have the same functions as traditional masks in the Lega culture. Among the Lega, masks are rarely worn on the face but rather placed on panels for the largest of them, or worn in the hand for smaller examples such as the small wooden Lukwakongo masks. Here this mask is of classical dimensions. Its shape is more angular than that of a Lega mask, with a straight arch of the eyebrows from which the bridge of the nose stands out in relief.
The Songola are located between the Lega territory to the east and the Lengola territory to the west.
