Yela Mbole mask
This African mask of Yela Mbole origin was certainly sculpted on the basis of the one present in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (see attached photo), cf. picture attached.
This MET mask is an authentic traditional art mask from R. D. Congo having served as part of the very secret ekanga society. The mask was kept in a specific basket in a dedicated box.
It is easily recognized among the flat masks of Africa, by its circular face with oblique streaks under the eyes. The styling is very advanced. The patina, in kaolin crust, suggests a relationship to the Moon as part of the initiation during which young people passed into adulthood.
