Makonde Njorowe mask
African wooden mask from the Makonde people located on the Mueda plateau, in Tanzania.
This is a njorowe, a famous traditional mask representing the belly of a pregnant woman. This type of mask was worn only by men, accompanied by a face mask.
There is a beautiful scarified median band between the breasts and the umbilicus.
Nowadays, masks such as this one still dance, but during festivities that are more folkloric than purely ritual, even if "pagan" beliefs and practices remain strongly rooted in society.
