Pende Mbuya mask

The epitome of feminine physiognomy, the mask has a smooth forehead, softly modelled cheekbones, and an oval silhouette.
In particular this artist has captured the 'bedroom eyes' (zanze) believed essential to women's power over men.
The eyes are relatively small in size and the upper lids curve downwards to create the impression that they are nearly closed. The feminine gaze is classed as the sculptor's greatest challenge and few succeed.

Traditional masks are worn during different types of events among the Bapende, ranging from village festivities to initiation.
