Dan Gunye Ge mask
The mask in African art from Ivory Coast
This African Dan mask features classic features including a fairly flat face with a bulging forehead, circular gaping eyes, wide open, and a small protruding slippery mouth.
Here, the imposing rope headdress that accompanies the dancer is still present and is adorned with cowries near the chin.
In order to support the mask's circumspect gaze, a band of white pigment envelops the eyes.
The Dan ethnic group is settled in the far west of Côte d'Ivoire, just off the border with Guinea and with Liberia.
Many types of masks exist in African Dan art; this one is a gunye ge type racing mask.
