Nsembu Kumu mask
Superb African Kumu or Komo mask from eastern Congolese.
Very flat, only the nose seems to project. The expressive eyes and mouth are geometric like the mask as a whole.
This aspect is supported by the play of colored contrast.
This Nsembu mask was used for the initiation of young people, the festivities, and the preparations for combat, like the Salampasu war masks just as expressive for that matter.
Here is a piece with an altogether remarkable look that blends beautifully with stripped contemporary art.
