Gyé in African art Yohouré / Yaouré
Divided into three ethnic groups, the Yaouré or Yohouré people have a tribal art that brings together many influences from their neighbors, the Gouro and the Baoulé. However, they possess a powerful identity, and have developed a very refined art. Traditional masks are used to influence the forces of nature, which are responsible for the ills of the community but also for its prosperity. It should be noted that Yaouré masks are forbidden to women. One of the main features of their mask is the 3 half circles of headdress that line the front of the face. It is a sign of power and wealth.
Yohouré tribal masks are often surrounded by a distinctive serrated border that structures the mask and emphasizes the overall harmony of the forms.
