Male figure - Mangbetu - Congo - SOLD
Traditional art Mangbetu
In Africa, Mangbetu are renowned for their architectural skills that their neighbors used. We find on this male tribal statue the highlighted male member, obviously in order to establish the power of the personage represented. The headdress is a characteristic element of the ethnic group since men and women were known to wear these elongated headdresses.
This ogival shape was considered aesthetic, which was why children's skulls were stretched with cords around their skulls in order to change their shape before the fontanelles were fully welded. The linear patterns present on the body finally represent the scarifications carried by the individuals.
