Mboko cup holder figurine - Luba - Congo - SOLD

Carrying figure of "Mboko" cut in African art

Among the most famous Baluba sculptors, the so-called "cup-carrying" figurines traditionally called "Mboko" are at the crossroads of two institutions: divination and prophetism. Their corpus reveals several workshops that flourished as the kingdom expanded. The statue carrying the cup was placed next to the diviner during the trance and represented the wife of the spirit who possesses it.

Mboko statue sold by our gallery to a collector.
