Mbulenga female figure - Luluwa - Congo - SOLD

Private collection of African art

The traditional Lulua statuary is strongly marked by the importance of scarification. The most famous statuettes carved by this ethnic group are called Mbulenga or charming female statuettes. The prominent belly of the woman emphasizes the importance of the lineage. Other statuettes fall into the category Chibola which are maternities intended to protect the unborn child and preside over childbirth. Chibola were the mainstay of the Bwanga bwa thibola cult, which is also found in neighboring Luba and Songye.
