Mukupela drum - Chokwe - Angola

Musical instruments in traditional African art

In Africa, musical instruments were not necessarily used to create dance music or to set the pace in rituals, but could also be used to communicate from village to village. This chokwe tribal drum rests on small feet and features heads resembling mwana pwo masks recognizable by their particular facies and frontal scarification.
