Figurative gold weight - Akan - Ghana

Weights to weigh the gold in Akan African art

The Akan ethnic group comprises more than six million people living on the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo. The Akan speak the Twi language. Clan leaders continue to store and keep collectible figurines and apparatus to weigh gold. These objects are often scenes of everyday life, like here where we can see a woman grind grain with a pestle and a mortar.
